There's a lot of interest in short barrel 7.62×51 (308) guns out there in the community, but one question really should be asked: At what barrel length does.
What Springfield says is "The M1A is designed and built to specifications to shoot standard factory .308 made to SAAMI specifications or 7.62×51 NATO ammunition." All the major commercial .308 loads, including the 180gr loads from Winchester and other manufacturers, are made to SAAMI specs and do not void the warranty on an M1A.
